During the past year, there have been numerous media reports concerning the Social Security disability program. Many myths and inaccuracies exist.
First, changes in the workforce explain most of the growth in the disability roles. Five factors exist. These are:
1) Baby boomers have aged into their high disability years.
2) People are roughly twice as likely to be disabled at age 50 as age 40.
3) The large number of people born between 1946 and 1964 are reaching the older age limit.
4) More women are qualifying for disability benefits because their numbers have increased in the workforce.
5) Social Security has increased the full retirement age from 65 to 66 thus adding a full year of disability benefits before transitioning to the Social Security retirement program.
If you fall in one of these categories and are unable to work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Please contact an attorney today.
