Three killed in high-speed North Carolina highway crash

The loss of young life is especially difficult to accept for those who are left behind. Bright futures full of love, families, careers and more are all taken away in an instant. There are some North Carolina families grappling today with that very painful reality.

We’re thinking of the three families who lost young people in a recent violent motor vehicle crash about 200 miles east of Charlotte. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 20-year-old driver is facing charges after he was allegedly speeding on N.C. Highway 231.

Law enforcement officials said the man was driving a Mustang “at a high rate of speed” when a vehicle ahead made a left-hand turn. The 20-year-old’s car crashed into the driver’s side of the turning vehicle, killing the driver, just 22 years old, and passenger, 23 years old, in that car.

A 25-year-old passenger in the Mustang also died in the wreck, police said.

The driver of the Mustang was injured, though there was no information in a news article about the extent of his injuries.

Officials said they do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

We do not know if the driver simply lost control of his speeding vehicle, or if he was impaired by something other than alcohol, or whether he was distracted at the time of the crash. We do know that he faces speeding and misdemeanor death by vehicle charges, however.
